The limited-edition Mercurial Superfly CR7 commemorates Cristiano Ronaldo’s achievements with his club and country this year. Those accomplishments include Ronaldo’s fourth Ballon d’Or, the UEFA Champions League title and the UEFA Euro 2016 championship.
Classic Black Mercurial gets a shimmering twist for CR7
In 1996, Nike partnered with the world’s most decorated international side, the Brasilian National Team. It was time to create a boot worthy of their caliber of play. Ronaldo, the squad’s young striker, was chosen as the muse. On the pitch, he was patient—stalking, waiting for the right moment. Then, when opportunity arose, he’d strike, accelerating to the ball with velocity that the game had never seen before. With the goal in his sights, Ronaldo would change in nature. He was, in short, mercurial.
Continuing the storied history of the boot that transformed the industry, Nike launches the new generation of the Mercurial to match the speed of today’s game.
In the summer of 2010, Cristiano Ronaldo stepped onto the pitch in South Africa in the Mercurial Superfly II, a boot featuring groundbreaking innovation for the time. The boot’s unique color combination, designed for increased visibility, became an instant classic.
In 2002, Brasil forward Ronaldo returned to center stage debuting groundbreaking boot technology. With a new, sleeker silhouette that looked more track spike than football shoe, the ‘02 Mercurial Vapor was Nike’s first sub-200 gram boot. It also featured the company’s first stitch-less upper and was designed using Nike’s first anatomical last.
As winter approaches, match-day conditions, particularly under floodlights, are darker and drearier than during earlier parts of the season. To combat these conditions, Nike has created the Hi-Vis Collection featuring the Nike Hypervenom, Mercurial IX, CTR360 and Tiempo IV in bright and contrasting color combinations of Electro Purple, Volt, Green Glow and Electric Green.
